I have to admit that over the years we have tried various sculpts for the Sontaran. Some we tried to look a more modern, some not as much but not so distant it looked funny. There are a few different clone batches in modern Doctor Who. Strax after all does not look like the Sontarans that were on Sarah Jane adventures. Point being, despite being clones…they weren’t and we wanted to use that to our advantage in making Sub-Commander Steff.

Version 2, can’t remember what happened to this one.. but it was a fail.
Version 3, Horrible 2 days before the con, need a mask now….oh god, what do I do? Granted the photo here is much worse that the final product. This photo was taken in the bathroom while we were building up the layers of latex and foam…while using a heat gun….yeah, we were in a hurry and not doing it properly.
Version 4, the sculpt came out well. Did a few different pulls from it for testing the color and different brands of latex due to thickness. This was the final mask we decided to go with. Unless something major happens, doubt we will be sculpting any new Sontarans. Have had a bit over overkill on this race.
